Windows 11's October Update: Remap the Copilot Key, Auto-Maximize Apps, and Say Goodbye to 24H2
KB5127648 is the October Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 — the first cumulative update for 26H2, and the last update 24H2 will ever get. Here's what's new and what to do.
Patch Tuesday brings a farewell and a few gifts
Microsoft rolled out KB5127648 on October 13 as the October 2026 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11, covering versions 26H2, 25H2, and 24H2. It bumps the OS to builds 26300.9711, 26200.9711, and 26100.9711 respectively. For 26H2 — released September 29 — it's the first cumulative update. For 24H2, it's the last one ever: support ended on October 13, and this package is the final patch it will receive. If you're still on 24H2, this update is both a goodbye and a nudge.
The update installs automatically through Windows Update unless you've paused it. Most users will see it listed as '2026-10 Security Update (KB5127648).'
What's actually new in the Windows 11 October update
This is a bigger feature drop than the average Patch Tuesday:
- Remap the Copilot key. If your laptop has the dedicated Copilot key and you'd rather it opened something useful, you can now reassign it in Settings.
- Auto-maximize apps. A new option automatically maximizes apps when opened — small, but genuinely useful on large monitors.
- Touchpad gestures. New precision touchpad gestures join the lineup, alongside broader touchpad control improvements.
- File Explorer previews. Better preview pane content in File Explorer.
- Emoji 17.0. The latest emoji set arrives system-wide.
- Tips widget and personalization. A new Tips widget plus accessibility and personalization tweaks.
- Bluetooth improvements and better Wi-Fi profile reuse in the Windows Recovery Environment.
- The PC-to-PC Migration experience in Windows Backup is discontinued — Microsoft is quietly retiring that path.
The rollout is gradual, so some features may not appear on every PC immediately.
For 24H2 users: the clock has stopped
October 13 was the end of support for Windows 11 24H2 — no more security updates after this one. Staying put is no longer a neutral choice; it's an actively risky one. The move is to 25H2 or 26H2, both covered by this same KB. Check your version with winver: build 26300 is 26H2, 26200 is 25H2, 26100 is 24H2. If you see 26100, plan the upgrade this month, not next quarter. We covered the end-of-support timeline in detail when it was announced — see our 24H2 farewell guide.
The boring stuff that matters
Under the hood, this month's update fixes the issues admins care about: Explorer black screens on Azure Virtual Desktop, Always On VPN connections stuck on 'Connecting,' and Storage Spaces Direct disks refusing to come online. Gamers and fingerprint-reader users get fixes too. It also bundles the October .NET Framework and .NET 8/9 security updates — install them, don't skip them.
The security stakes this month are real: Microsoft's October Patch Tuesday addressed over 1,400 vulnerabilities across its products, including a Windows flaw already under active exploitation. Pausing updates for convenience is fine; pausing them indefinitely is not.
Should you install now or wait?
Install it. This isn't a feature update that might break your drivers — it's a cumulative security release, and the actively-exploited flaw makes waiting the riskier move. If you're cautious, give it a week for early reports, but don't let 'a week' become 'never.' And if the update treadmill has you thinking about alternatives, the grass isn't necessarily greener: iOS 27.2 is skipping 27.1 entirely and Google's Play System updates have their own quirks. Every platform is a treadmill now. The trick is staying on the supported one.
