NetBox Wants to Be the Source of Truth for the AI Datacenter Boom

NetBox Labs used its first conference to announce partnerships with NVIDIA and Grafana, positioning NetBox as the intelligence layer for AI datacenters. Here's what each deal does and why it matters.

NetBox Labs held its first-ever conference, NetBox Evolve, at the Kennedy Space Center on October 13 — and used it to make a bold claim: NetBox should be the 'intelligence layer' for the AI datacenter buildout. Backing the claim were two heavyweight partnerships, one with NVIDIA and one with Grafana, announced on stage.

AI Datacenter Management Needs a Source of Truth

Here's the problem NetBox solves. Modern infrastructure is defined in code, provisioned by automation, and monitored by a dozen different tools — and every one of those systems has its own opinion about what exists. When the firewall rules say one thing, the monitoring dashboard says another, and the automation playbook assumes a third, you get outages. NetBox is the open-source 'source of truth' that records what the infrastructure is supposed to look like: every device, cable, IP address, rack, and tenant.

CEO Kris Beevers put it bluntly on stage: 'configuration, observability and automation all depend on having an authoritative record of what infrastructure should exist and how it should be operating. That record is NetBox.' It's the kind of statement that sounds obvious until you've debugged a 3 a.m. outage caused by two systems disagreeing about reality.

The company also teased new ways for people — and AI agents — to design and run infrastructure environments. Agents that provision real infrastructure are moving from research demos to production, and the agent wave will need exactly this kind of authoritative record to avoid doing confident, catastrophic things.

The NVIDIA Deal: Config That Flows From the Record

The NVIDIA partnership makes NetBox a native source of truth for NVIDIA Configuration Manager (NVCM). In practice, that means configuration data flows directly from NetBox records to automate provisioning across NVIDIA-native AI cluster networks — the GPU-dense fabrics that train frontier models.

This matters because AI clusters are the most demanding networks ever built. Thousands of GPUs need identical, precise configuration; a single misconfigured switch can silently degrade a training run worth millions. Having the intended state flow from one authoritative record into NVCM removes an entire class of drift — the slow divergence between what's documented and what's real that causes so many large-scale infrastructure incidents.

The Grafana Deal: Live Context in Your Dashboards

The Grafana partnership ships as an official, free, open-source NetBox plugin in the Grafana catalog. It pipes live infrastructure context — site, role, tenant, rack, owner, lifecycle state — straight into dashboards and alerts, with no pipeline changes and no added metric cost.

If you've ever stared at a Grafana alert for an IP address and wondered what that box actually is, you understand the value immediately. Observability tools are great at telling you something is wrong; they're terrible at telling you what the thing is. NetBox fills that gap.

As a bonus, NetBox Labs' open-source Orb platform now feeds network-flow and packet telemetry into Grafana Cloud — so the same dashboards get both the 'what is it' and the 'what's it doing.'

Why This Actually Matters

The customer list does the persuading. NetBox is used by more than 90 percent of the top neoclouds — the GPU-cloud companies renting out AI compute — plus Arm, J.P. Morgan Chase, and CoreWeave. When the companies actually building AI infrastructure standardize on your source of truth, the 'intelligence layer' pitch stops sounding like marketing.

The deeper trend: AI datacenters are being built at a pace the industry has never attempted, and the tooling is consolidating around a few open standards. NetBox positioning itself at the center of configuration (NVIDIA) and observability (Grafana) in the same week is a land grab for the control plane of the AI era. Boring? Absolutely. Important? More than almost anything else announced this week.
