iPhone Duo Preorders Open Today: Apple's First Foldable Costs $1,999
Preorders open today at 5 a.m. PT for Apple's first foldable — a $1,999 book-style phone with a 7.6-inch inner display, a nano-texture crease fix, and no Face ID. Here's who should actually buy one.
Preorders for the iPhone Duo open today — 5 a.m. PT, October 16 — and Apple's first foldable is exactly as expensive as feared: $1,999 for 256GB. It ships October 23 in more than 70 countries. Seven years after Samsung's original Galaxy Fold, Apple is finally in the folding game, and its pitch is simple: everyone else built experiments; Apple built the finished product.
What Apple actually built
The Duo opens like a book. Closed, it's a 5.4-inch phone Apple compares to a passport. Open, it's a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display — the largest screen ever on an iPhone, about 50% more area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both panels share the same aspect ratio so content flows between them without reformatting, both hit 120Hz ProMotion and 3,000 nits peak brightness, and the inner screen gets a nano-texture finish designed to cut glare and hide the crease — the thing that has annoyed foldable owners since 2019.
Underneath: the A20 Pro chip with a custom vapor chamber, a dual-battery design (one cell per half) rated at up to 31 hours of video on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer, and grade 5 titanium polished to a mirror finish. It's 5.2mm thin when open, 11.3mm closed, weighs 254 grams, and carries an IP68 rating — meaningful, because water resistance is where most foldables still compromise.
Two things are missing that you'll notice: Face ID is gone, replaced by Touch ID in the side button (the under-display camera tech isn't ready for Apple's face-unlock standards), and there's no dedicated telephoto lens — just a 48MP main and 48MP ultra wide, with an optical-quality 2x crop from the main sensor. iOS 27 brings Split View multitasking to iPhone for the first time, and Apple Pencil support arrives later this year.
Should you buy the iPhone Duo?
Short answer: probably not at launch — unless you know exactly why you want it.
Buy it if you're the person currently carrying a phone and a tablet and hating it. The Duo is for multitaskers, frequent travelers, and anyone whose phone is mostly a screen rather than a camera. The Split View workflows and the huge canvas genuinely change how you use a phone.
Wait if the camera is your priority. The iPhone 18 Pro costs $1,199 — $800 less — and gets a variable-aperture main camera plus a real telephoto. The Duo's camera system is good, not best-in-class, and at two grand that stings. Wait too if $1,999 makes you flinch: the standard iPhone 18 line lands around spring 2027, and foldable prices always fall fast once the second generation arrives.
And keep perspective: on the Android side, this fall's flagships like OPPO's Find X10 series pack 200MP cameras and 7,000mAh silicon-carbon batteries at roughly half the Duo's price. Different ecosystem, different buyer — but it shows what $2,000 buys when you're not paying the Apple-and-foldable tax.
And here's the catch nobody at Apple will mention: preorders open today, but reviews aren't expected until around October 20. You're being asked to spend two grand on the iPhone Duo four days before anyone independent has tested the crease, the hinge, or the battery. Add reported production constraints — supply-chain sources put early assembly yields just above 60% — and launch-day stock will be thin. If you must have one, use Apple's Get Ready process to save your configuration now so checkout is one click at 5 a.m.
The crease, the price, and the seven-year wait
Samsung launched the original Galaxy Fold in 2019. It had a visible crease, durability questions, and a $1,980 price. Apple watched for seven years, then shipped its answer: a titanium plate under the display, adhesives engineered to let layers glide like book pages, and a hinge built from more than 100 components.
Was the wait worth it? On engineering, probably — the nano-texture display and IP68 rating address the two complaints that have dogged foldables for years. On price, Apple learned nothing and everything: $1,999 matches Samsung's original ask, because foldables are a sub-5% niche where margins are fat and early adopters pay up.
There's a strategic layer too. Foldables are Huawei's stronghold in China, and Apple needs an answer there. CEO John Ternus called the Duo "the most transformational change to iPhone since the original" — which is the kind of line you say when you're seven years late and need the story to be about polish, not speed.
The buying math, in one list
If you're going for it anyway, here's the damage:
- $1,999 (256GB), $2,199 (512GB), up to $3,199 (2TB) — or about $83/month for 24 months.
- Two colors: star white and night sky. That's it. Pick quickly.
- The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. No physical SIM tray — check your carrier before you commit.
- Trade-in and Apple's Get Ready flow can cut the line on preorder morning.
- This is one half of Apple's biggest fall in years — the other is its smart-home push.
