WhatsApp's Restricted Chat: How to Lock Down Sensitive Conversations
WhatsApp's new Restricted Chat locks individual conversations: no media auto-save, no exports, no Meta AI, no linked devices. How to enable it (beta), the phone-only tradeoff, and who should use it.
WhatsApp is rolling out its most serious privacy upgrade in years — and it's aimed at individual conversations, not your whole account. The new 'Restricted Chat' feature lets you lock specific chats behind four hard restrictions: no media auto-saving, no chat exports, no Meta AI inside the conversation, and no access from linked devices. Here's what it does, how to turn it on, and the tradeoff you should know about.
What WhatsApp Restricted Chat Actually Does
Restricted Chat is opt-in and per-conversation. Pick a chat, flip the toggle in the chat info screen, and four things change immediately:
- Media stops auto-saving to your gallery. Photos and videos stay inside WhatsApp instead of landing in the camera roll where other apps — and anyone borrowing your phone — can see them.
- Chat export is disabled. Nobody can dump the conversation history to a file and walk away with it.
- Meta AI is shut out of the chat. The assistant can't read, summarize, or act on the conversation.
- The chat vanishes from linked devices. No WhatsApp Web, no desktop app, no tablets, no companion phones — the conversation exists only on your primary phone.
Enabling it posts a notice in the chat, so the other person knows the conversation is now restricted. Individual chats only; there's no blanket 'restrict everything' switch, which is arguably the right design — you lock the conversations that need it.
How to Enable WhatsApp Restricted Chat
One important caveat first: as of October 14, this is beta-only. WABetaInfo spotted it rolling out to select beta testers on October 2 for Android (beta versions 2.26.36.4 and 2.26.39.11) and October 3 for iOS (26.39.10.20 via TestFlight). There's no public stable-release date yet.
If you're on a supported beta, the steps are simple:
- Open the chat you want to restrict.
- Tap the contact or group name to open the chat info screen.
- Find the Restricted Chat toggle and switch it on.
- Confirm — a notice appears in the conversation for all participants.
Not seeing the toggle? You're either not on a new-enough beta or not in the rollout group yet. WhatsApp staggers these releases, so patience is the only fix. When it hits stable, expect the usual weeks-long rollout.
The Tradeoff: Your Chat Becomes Phone-Only
The linked-device block is the big deal — and the real tradeoff. Everything else on the list is a tightening of existing controls, but cutting off linked devices closes an entire attack path. Unofficial clients and third-party AI agents commonly gain access to WhatsApp accounts through linked-device connections; Restricted Chat shuts that door for the conversations you mark.
The price is convenience: a restricted chat is phone-only, period. If you do most of your messaging from a desktop at work, you'll feel it. Your messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted whether Restricted Chat is on or off — this feature isn't about encryption, it's about shrinking the surfaces where the decrypted conversation can leak.
Worth noting in the same breath: WhatsApp also started testing optional usernames around October 4, letting people message you without seeing your phone number. Between usernames and Restricted Chat, WhatsApp is quietly building the privacy toolkit its most at-risk users — journalists, activists, anyone with genuinely sensitive conversations — have been asking for.
Who Should Bother
For most people, the honest answer is: your two or three most sensitive chats. The ones with financial details, health information, or the kind of personal stuff you'd hate to see screenshotted into a group chat. Restricted Chat won't stop screenshots — nothing can — but it kills the quiet, scalable exfiltration paths: bulk exports, linked-device siphoning, AI ingestion.
And layer it with the basics. Breaches keep happening at national scale; the accounts that survive are the ones with strong authentication. If you haven't moved your important accounts to passkeys yet, do that this week — it's the single highest-leverage security upgrade most people haven't made. Restricted Chat protects the conversation; passkeys protect the account. You want both.
