AI Chatbot Privacy Settings: Stop ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Others Training on Your Chats
Most AI chatbots train on your conversations by default. Here is exactly where to find the opt-out toggle in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, and Perplexity.

Why this matters more than you think
Here is a number that should bother you: 53% of people did not know AI chats train models by default, according to a DuckDuckGo survey of 1,944 US adults conducted in June 2026. Another 58% said they are uncomfortable with their chats being used for training. That gap is exactly why AI chatbot privacy settings matter: the toggles exist, but most people never find them. And 32% admitted they have told an AI something they kept from family or friends.
A separate Proton survey of 4,014 people across the US, UK, France, and Germany found 66% had discussed something sensitive with a chatbot, while only 11 to 20% actually trust the companies holding those conversations. The gap between what people share and what they understand is the entire problem.
Incogni's 2026 ranking of 13 AI platforms puts this in perspective: ChatGPT and Vibe rank best for privacy, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, and DeepSeek sit in the middle, and Gemini, Meta AI, and Copilot land in the highest-risk tier. But rankings aside, every major bot has a toggle. This AI chatbot privacy settings guide walks through each one below, with the current setting paths as of October 2026.
ChatGPT
On Free, Plus, and Pro plans, your chats train OpenAI's models by default. The toggle is under Settings, then Data Controls: turn off "Improve the model for everyone."
Three things people get wrong:
- Memory is a separate toggle under Settings, then Personalization. Turning off training does not stop the bot from remembering things about you.
- Deleting a chat does not wipe saved memories. Clear those separately.
- Temporary Chat is not used for training and does not appear in your history, but OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety review. Deleted chats are permanently deleted within 30 days.
Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API traffic are excluded from training by default, which is one of the few cases where paying changes the privacy math.
Claude
Go to Settings, then Privacy, and turn off "Help improve our AI models." Since September 2025, Free, Pro, and Max users are asked to choose, and the popup presented the toggle switched on, so check even if you think you already decided.
Claude's Incognito chat (the ghost icon) is the cleaner option for sensitive questions: it is not saved to history or memory and is not used for training. Note that opted-in data can persist for up to 5 years in de-identified form, while deleted chats clear the backend within 30 days.
Gemini
Google keeps your Gemini activity on by default if you are over 18. Turn it off at Settings and help, then Activity, or at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini. Auto-delete defaults to 18 months; you can change it to 3 months, 36 months, or off entirely.
Temporary chats are not used for training and are kept for 72 hours. The catch: chats selected for human review are disconnected from your account but can be kept for up to 3 years, and submitting feedback on a response sends your last 24 hours of chats to reviewers. Think twice before hitting that thumbs-up on a conversation containing anything personal.
Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, and Perplexity
- Copilot: Signed-in personal accounts train on chats, including voice and uploaded files, by default. There are two training toggles under Settings, then Privacy, and you need to switch off both. Conversation activity is stored for 18 months. Work accounts under Entra ID, M365 Copilot, signed-out users, under-18s, and users in Brazil, China (excluding Hong Kong), Israel, Nigeria, South Korea, and Vietnam are carved out.
- Grok: The toggle is in X Settings, under Privacy and safety: "Grok & Third-Party Collaborators." Remember that Grok also trains on your public X posts, so the chatbot toggle is only half the picture.
- Meta AI: Since December 16, 2025, Meta uses Meta AI chats for ad targeting, with no opt-out in the US. The EU, UK, and South Korea are exempt. If you are in the US, assume your Meta AI conversations feed the ad machine.
- Perplexity: Go to Account Settings, then Preferences, and turn off "AI data retention." Uploaded files are deleted after 7 days.
AI chatbot privacy settings: the universal rules
Toggles differ, but the underlying rules are the same everywhere:
- Opting out stops future training only. Anything already collected stays collected.
- Feedback buttons still send the conversation, even with training off. That thumbs-up is a data transfer.
- Work and business accounts are protected by contract, not by toggle. That is stronger, not weaker.
- Shared conversation links can be indexed by search engines. In August 2025, more than 370,000 shared Grok conversations turned up in Google results, some containing passwords. Never share a link to a chat with anything sensitive in it.
- Assume anything you type could be read by a human reviewer, subpoenaed, or breached. Only 25% of people in the DuckDuckGo survey knew their chats could be subpoenaed. Now you are one of them.
The honest version of this advice is simpler than any settings menu: do not tell a chatbot anything you would not want published. The toggles reduce the risk; they do not eliminate it.
