OriginOS 7 Is Rolling Out: Vivo's Android 17 Update Adds an AI Agent and 5-App Multitasking

Vivo's Android 17 update brings Jovi, an AI agent that runs scheduled tasks on its own, plus 5-app multitasking and a full visual overhaul. Rollout runs from now through February 2027.

Vivo has pulled back the curtain on OriginOS 7, its Android 17-based update, and it's a bigger deal than the typical annual skin refresh. The China rollout started October 9, India gets it starting end of October, and the wave list stretches through February 2027 across roughly 40 devices — X, V, S, T, and Y series plus iQOO phones.

This is the third major Android 17 skin to land in a month, after ColorOS 17 on the new Oppo Find X10 and Nothing OS 5. The Android 17 cycle is shaping up to be the most aggressive skin competition in years, and Vivo is not coming quietly.

OriginOS 7 features worth the update: Jovi, the AI agent

The headline is Jovi, and Vivo is deliberately calling it an AI agent, not an assistant. The distinction is doing real work here. Jovi doesn't just answer questions — it finds information, reads and summarizes your files, and runs scheduled tasks proactively, on its own, across a connected phone and PC.

Read that again: scheduled tasks it runs without being asked. That's the line between an assistant and an agent, and it's where the whole industry is heading. The honest question is how much autonomy people actually want from their phone software — scheduled summaries of your unread files sound great until the agent surfaces something you'd rather it hadn't. Vivo's bet is that the proactive side wins. We'll see how the privacy settings read once the update lands.

Jovi is joined by a stack of smaller AI tools that are more immediately useful:

  • Snap Note turns whiteboard and slide photos into editable documents.
  • AI Search lets you describe a file instead of remembering its name — 'the PDF with the quarterly numbers' instead of digging through folders.
  • Snap & Go pulls travel and event details from screenshots straight into your calendar.
  • AI Recorder does speaker recognition, outlines, and summaries of recordings.
  • Smart Call Assistant answers missed calls and generates call overviews.

These are the 'save me five minutes a day' features, and honestly they're the ones most people will actually touch. The agent vision is exciting; the call assistant is useful.

Five apps on one screen: Origin Workbench

Origin Workbench is Vivo's multi-window system, and it runs up to 5 apps on one screen simultaneously with cross-app drag-and-drop. It needs 12GB of RAM, which tells you it's targeting flagships, but the drag-and-drop between apps is the part that matters — multi-window is old news, multi-window that actually moves content between panes is not.

This is desktop behavior on a phone, and it's where Android's tablet-era flexibility is finally filtering down to handsets. Whether five apps on a phone screen is productivity or chaos depends entirely on your discipline.

The visual overhaul and the smoothness pitch

OriginOS 7 brings a full 'Light and Shadow' aesthetic redesign: Dynamic Translucent Material with switchable textures (Realistic, Natural, Soft), liquid lockscreen themes, a new icon set, and playful Wiggle, Glint, and Pet Pals lockscreen options, plus an Atomic Sticker Library.

Underneath the prettiness, there's the Origin Smooth Engine with Fluid Motion animations across 200+ scenarios and Spring Animation that reacts to swipe speed and direction. Vivo claims a '72-month anti-aging' smoothness result from its lab testing — six years of staying smooth. Take the number with the appropriate grain of salt, but the direction is right: the industry's finally optimizing for the phone you keep, not just the phone you unbox.

Rollout and the small stuff

Wave one in China (October 9) covered the X Fold 6/5, X300 series, and iQOO 15 series. India starts at the end of October with the X Fold 5 and X300 series first. The waves keep going through February 2027, covering around 40 devices — which is an impressively wide net for an Android skin update.

The Vivo V80 is the first phone shipping with OriginOS 7 out of the box (alongside the X Fold 6 and S2 FE). The global beta preview closed on September 20 with 500 slots each for the X300 Pro and iQOO 15.

Also in the mix: improved Apple ecosystem connectivity (the cross-platform detente continues), dual-path directional audio, the Blue Sea battery endurance system, security upgrades, Game Eye Protection (claimed 29% visual comfort improvement), and accessibility upgrades.

The verdict so far

OriginOS 7 is Vivo playing to its strengths: ship a big visual refresh, stuff in genuinely useful AI tools, and roll it out to enough devices that it actually matters. The Jovi agent is the experiment — proactive AI on a phone is still early, and the privacy story will make or break it. But between the five-app multitasking and the smoothness engine, this is one of the more substantial Android skin updates in recent memory. Eligible devices start seeing it this month; the rest follow through February.
